One model line, five approaches to energy

BMW has unveiled the fifth-generation X5 with an unusually broad powertrain plan. Depending on market and launch phase, the range will include combustion engines with 48-volt assistance, a plug-in hybrid, the first battery-electric iX5 and, later, a series-production hydrogen fuel-cell version. The strategy turns one SUV platform into a test of how different energy systems can serve the same basic vehicle brief.

The rollout begins in October 2026 with the US-market X5 40 xDrive. Rear-wheel-drive X5 40, X5 50e xDrive plug-in hybrid and iX5 60 xDrive are scheduled for the first quarter of 2027, followed later by a V8 M Performance derivative. BMW has not attached a date to the hydrogen model beyond placing it later in the programme.

Why the iX5 numbers need careful labels

The iX5 60 xDrive uses an 800-volt version of BMW’s sixth-generation electric architecture, with cylindrical battery cells, bidirectional charging and a standard NACS inlet for the announced US specification. BMW estimates 435 miles of range using its own testing based on EPA procedures. That is a development estimate, not yet an EPA-certified result, and should remain labelled as such until an official rating is published.

The company’s “Heart of Joy” controller coordinates propulsion, regenerative and friction braking, charging and parts of the steering and chassis logic. The potential benefit is not a larger headline number but faster coordination between systems—particularly useful in a heavy electric SUV where consistent brake blending and body control affect both confidence and efficiency.

The plug-in hybrid remains a distinct answer

The X5 50e xDrive combines a six-cylinder engine with a 194 hp electric motor for a stated 483 hp system output and 516 lb-ft of torque. Its preliminary US electric-range estimate is 44 miles, around 15 per cent above the outgoing version according to BMW. A 26.5 kWh usable battery makes this a materially different ownership proposition from a light-assist hybrid: regular charging is central to achieving the intended benefit.

US starting prices are announced at $69,800 for the rear-drive X5 40, $72,100 for the 40 xDrive, $77,500 for the 50e xDrive and $79,800 for the iX5 60 xDrive, before a $1,450 destination charge. These figures are market-specific and cannot be carried directly into European or global comparisons.

The new X5 is less a winner-takes-all powertrain decision than a controlled comparison carried out within one model family. That could make the eventual specification tables unusually informative: packaging, weight, towing, price and energy storage can be compared without first accounting for completely different bodies and cabins.

For now, the most eye-catching electric-range figure remains preliminary, the hydrogen version is further away and regional availability will differ. The useful conclusion is not that one powertrain has already won, but that BMW is keeping several infrastructure assumptions alive inside its highest-volume large SUV.
